This is a fascinating book for anyone interested in the British countryside. The first third of the book is a history of human effects on the landscape, beginning with the Neolithic period. It makes clear that man has shaped the physical environment from the time that humans first appeared on the scene. The second third is a natural history of hedgerows and walls. The last third is of interest only to the specialist, since it covers the differences in hedgerow styles in various parts of Britain.

Well written and wide ranging approach, incorporating history, natural history and impacts of policy.
Although I do not garden in the UK, I've thoroughly enjoyed learning about the origins, politics, and techniques of these beautiful living walls. The species of plants described do not grow here in the southeastern US; however, the idea can be transferred over with the right plant material. I wish Americans utilized these bio rich practices rather than dead, cold board fences. The best take away from this book is furthering my knowledge of the intricate relationships woven through every ecosystem. Also, the author is quite funny which makes some of the dryer tid-bits go down easy.
